Internet Service Provider (ISP)

An Internet Service Provider is a requirement to getting connected to the Internet.
ach00048.jpg (11796 bytes) Often I'm asked, "just what is the internet."   Aside from the stock answers of it being the "Great Information Highway"   I ask them to visualize a large spider's web.  Now visualize a long underground tunnel with many spider webs stretched across that tunnel for as far as you can see.  That visualization represents the many communications paths of the Net.   A few may fail from time to time, however, when that happens and unless your ISP goes down, your link takes a different path to its destination.

There are so many ISPs around the world that it is almost impossible to keep up with them.  Being an ISP is not easy.  Once On-line, most people come to feel that an ISP is as important, in their lives, as the telephone.   When its not working right, they go crazy.  Especially on a fast trading day.

It is highly recommended that you eventually have two separate ISPs.  When I say separate I mean that each one provides a separate path to the internet.  When calling an ISP about service, ask who their "Next Upstream Provider" is.  Then ask for that Provider's Upstream Provider.   Check your notes.  NO two providers should be the same.   If so, call another ISP.

Unfortunately, in less populated areas, its not possible to have two ISPs.  If your service is poor, complain, complain, and complain.  Get your Net buddies and buddetts to complain as a group.  March right into their offices in mass.  They'll get the message.

If you feel you're getting poor service, don't be afraid to complain; it's your right.  Remember, you're paying them for service.

Also, sometimes the cheapest ISP is not always the most productive.  Buyer Beware.

Below is a link that lists most ISPs around the world.
